K M Parivelan is the Chairperson & Associate Professor at Nodal Centre of Excellence for Human Rights Education & Centre for Statelessness and Refugee Studies, School of Law, Rights and Constitutional Governance, Tata Institute of social Sciences. Previously he had served at United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) for facilitating the post-Tsunami recovery and at United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and facilitated the voluntary repatriation of Sri Lankan refugees as part of the peace process. He also briefly served at Pondicherry (Central) University, Puducherry and Jamia Millia Central University, New Delhi, respectively.

Banhi Sarkar has recently completed her Master’s in Media and Cultural Studies from the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (Mumbai). She did her Bachelor’s in Chemistry from Lady Brabourne College (University of Calcutta). Her interests lie in research, writing, filmmaking, public policy, and social work. She has previously worked as a freelance content writer at Hooked Upon, Trippin Traveller and Gre Edge, and as a translation coordinator for organisations like Calcutta Research Group and Story Weaver. She wishes to work in the fields of media and research in the future and create awareness about different social issues through her work.

Pallavi Sareen is a journalist covering development in peripheries of Jammu and Kashmir, India. Pallavi’s passion lies in stories of gender justice, human rights and conflict. She is the co-founder of The Straight Line, a Digital media venture and has Freelanced with Atlas Obscura, The Wire.in, 101reporters, News 18 and The Tribune among others. She has received UNESCO/Public Media Alliance/Media Action Nepal Fellowship and contributed towards framing 'Code of Conduct for Conflict reporting in South Asia.' She was part of the first Cohort of "Niche Media Entrepreneurs" by Craig Newmark School of Journalism.

Wahida Parveez is a doctoral candidate at Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi. Her thesis examines the representation of identity struggle in Northeast India in Hindi literature. She earned her MPhil degree from the same university and studied the representation of socio-political, cultural, and historical sphere of northeast India in Hindi literature. She is a member of Miya Community Research Collective and has been part of numerous research projects which investigate the oppression and inequalities faced by the Miya people in Assam to advance epistemic and social justice agenda. Her co-authored research paper has been published by the prestigious American Journal of Community Psychology. Her non-academic writings have been published by media platforms like The Wire. She was part of a research project commissioned by the Center for Race and Gender, University of Berkeley California as research assistant. The project examined citizenship registration and contestation in Assam. Apart from academic research and writing, she has been working as a grass-root community worker. As part of her community work she has been documenting the stories of former detainees in Assam and providing them psychosocial support.

Media Workshop


The Calcutta Research Group (CRG), along with Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung, Institute for Human Sciences (IWM), Vienna and The Commonwealth Journalists Association-India (CJA-I) will hold a twoday international workshop in Kolkata on 24-25 August 2022 on climate change and disaster reporting directed towards binding together the perspectives on climate disaster and the importance of reflecting on mitigation with special focus on the role of media in bringing climate change into public discourse. The meet will also strive to train young journalists on crucial issues related to climatic change and pandemic reporting and associated migrations as well as presentations of case studies and evolving ethical standards for unbiased reporting. The impacts of climate change on gender, caste, occupation, children, and varied sections of society, roles and responsibilities of government in post-evacuation phase and the influences of media in forging implications on governance will remain among the focal theme of the workshop.
